Beside them is the manila accordion folder marked in careful block printing: Report 47-B.
In the middle of the shelf, where the afternoon light from the west window falls across it on clear days, sits a small wooden card file box built sometime in the 1940s out of fitted oak. The drawers still slide smoothly. The brass pulls are worn dark where two generations of hands opened them.
On top of the box is a small square of yellowed paper, taped down under a strip of clear tape gone brittle at the edges.
Two words remain visible in careful pencil handwriting.

Across the American West, old hydrological knowledge still sits in private family archives: notebooks left behind by geologists, hydrologists, survey engineers, county agents, and working people who walked the land before satellite maps and digital databases made everyone feel informed.
