The foundation rented a modest building and converted it into something that felt like safety: clean rooms, a communal kitchen, a small music space with donated instruments, a quiet corner with books and warm lamps.
Margaret visited often. She didn’t want to be a distant name on a plaque. She wanted to be the woman behind the coffee pot, the one who asked if you’d eaten today.
One evening, a young man about nineteen hovered in the doorway of the kitchen, hands in his pockets like he was trying to hide himself.
Margaret was chopping vegetables for soup—because she still believed in feeding people first.
“You hungry?” she asked.
The boy shrugged. “I don’t want to be a problem.”

Margaret sat in the front row, hands folded, heart heavy and bright at the same time.
After the event, she walked outside into the cool air and looked up at the stars. It reminded her of the nights she used to stand behind the diner and smoke a cigarette she didn’t enjoy, just to have an excuse to breathe.
She imagined her son Michael somewhere in the vast dark, not as a ghost, but as a presence inside choices.
She imagined the boy with the guitar too—older now only in memory, but alive in the ripples he’d created with music.
Margaret whispered into the night, voice steady.
“I didn’t save you,” she said. “I just fed you.”
But she knew that wasn’t the whole truth.

Margaret went back inside and touched the framed napkin gently.
